If humans are descended from apes, why are there still apes around?

Evolution does not work by going in a straight line. Evolution is a branching bush. Humans and apes are two different branches of the same bush. We share a common ancestor with modern apes. Apes need not be extinct for humans to exist. This is like asking, "If I am of Irish descent and live in America, why are there still people living in Ireland?"
